The right way to lose weight is to identify and eat certain foods that help your body burn fat combined with certain fat-burning exercises. The purpose of fat burning exercise is to make your body burn off already stored fat in your body.

Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, spinach, artichoke, lima beans, peas, cabbage, cucumbers and carrots are excellent sources of minerals but low in calories. Veggies don’t contain fats either and their carbohydrate content is very low (even compared to fruits). The best way to cook vegetable would be to boil them or stir fry them with healthy oils like olive oil, sunflower oil, Soybean oil or sesame oil.

Green Tea – A key compound found in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). It is a powerful anti-oxidant said to be beneficial to people with a long list of maladies including cancer. As a fat burner, it fires up your nervous system and helps your body to burn more calories, especially when combined with caffeine.

Lentils: Lentils are also known as edible pulses. They are not only filling and nutritious (in terms of minerals) but are also low on calories and rich in plant proteins/amino-acids. They are excellent sources of dietary fiber and are known to lower the bad-cholesterol (and thus contribute to healthy heart. Beans are high in protein which helps your body build muscle. Muscle cells burn calories at a much higher rate than fat cells so even a slight increase can really help your body burn fat. It is speculated that the fiber in beans is also an effective aid in preventing your body from absorbing fat. Eat kidney, lima, navy, and white beans but avoid baked or refried beans.

Whole grain cereals – Whole grain cereals like maize, rice, guinea corn, millet sorghum, etc are excellent sources of fiber. The real benefit comes from the complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs don’t cause your insulin levels to spike so your body doesn’t go into “fat storage” mode. Oatmeal, wheat, barley, rye, etc are great fat burners because they fill you up but don’t cause an insulin spike. Having oatmeal for breakfast can also bump your metabolism by as much as 10% so you’ll burn fat at a higher rate than normal.

Poultry: Poultry like chicken are low on fats and carbohydrates yet rich in protein. Proteins are not only more complex to digest & assimilate (and thus require a higher expenditure of energy) but they also require more energy to be stored as fats. Go in for lean meats. Turkey is a great fat burner because it is very lean and it is packed with protein.

Eggs: Eggs are not high on calories and are also low on unhealthy fats. Recent studies have shown that eggs don’t contribute to increasing bad cholesterol, but can serve to improve good cholesterol (necessary for a healthy body) when eaten in moderation. The B12 in eggs is also said to aid in the destruction of fat cells.

Lean beef - Lean beef helps you burn fat because it has protein which requires your body to work hard to digest. This protein also helps you build muscle and the more muscle you have, the more calories your body can burn.

Skim Milk – The calcium in milk can help your metabolism and people with a high calcium intake tend to lose weight faster than people who skimp on it. The carbs in milk also cause your body to keep your insulin levels low thus preventing your body from storing fat.

Fish: Fish like Salmon is a good source of protein and healthy fats (rich in omega-3 fatty acids). Salmon, mackerel, trout and tuna are not only tasty but are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids while also being low on calories and saturated fat content.

Sardines – Sardines are packed with fish oil which is widely known to be a great fat burner. Some body builders practically live on sardines because they are high in protein and fish oil and the combination burns fat and helps them stay ripped.

Tuna – Tuna lowers the amount of leptin in your body and that in turn speeds up your metabolism. This helps your body burn fat faster and more efficiently. The protein in tuna also aids in the production of muscle which helps you burn even more fat. (This is one of my favorite fat burning foods).

Olive Oil – Olive oil not only burns fat but it also keeps your cholesterol down. Most people use it in place of their normal cooking oil making it a very easy way to make a positive change to their diets.

Almonds and walnuts: These nuts are a great source of healthy fats. People who don’t consume healthy fats are more likely to gain weight than people who do. This is the reason why it’s not very ideal to eliminate healthy fats from your diet in a bid to reduce weight. Healthy fats are needed for a harmonious functioning of the body because most of the body’s cell structure is made from these fats.

Water: Though water would not count as a food, because it has no calories, it would need to mention that water helps improve the over-all metabolism of the body and thus helps burn fat. And of course, water helps flush out toxins and thus improves the capacity of the body to stay
